Not talking about covid, Afghanistan or abortion in Texas. Not talking about mask mandates, city elections or gun violence. Not talking about floods, fires or hurricanes.

Instead, let’s celebrate some good news.

Mayor Indya Kincannon leads a short walk on the Big Rock Pass.

Legacy Parks Foundation officially opened the Big Rock Pass greenway connector on Thursday. The newest trail in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness connects Mary Vestal Park to Fort Dickerson Park. Bobby Smelcer gave an easement across his private property to make this happen. Thanks, Bobby!

TVA is giving up to $5,000 grants to STEM classrooms across the region. Info here. The goal – to help prepare kids to innovate in the decades ahead, says VP Jeannette Mills.

Young Williams Animal Center needs emergency foster families for rescue animals arriving via transport from Gulf Coast areas affected by Hurricane Ida. Millions of residents and businesses are without power, including animal shelters. Volunteer here.

Veterans can get free legal advice from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty Street. Issues include landlord/tenant, veterans’ benefits, criminal defense, contract disputes, estate planning and more. This happens because lawyers and law students volunteer. Thanks, y’all.

Volunteers will gather to trim the 7-acre grounds of Mabry-Hazen House, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 1711 Dandridge Ave. It’s not too late to join. Info here.

Free Flu Shot Saturday is coming on Sept. 25. That’s when doctors, nurses and nursing students will give shots at drive-up clinics at area high schools. Thanks, Dr. Charlie Barnett, who initiated this 29 years ago, and to all the volunteers.

Most folks have a day off work on Monday, and a certain football coach went 1-0 after the game on Thursday. Knoxville TN is a great place to live – the home of Volunteers.
