As summer approaches, YMCA of East Tennessee is stepping up in a big way to support families across the region. Their annual Summer Food Program is gearing up to provide free meals to any household with children under 18, helping ensure that no child goes hungry when school is out.
The organization is working to spread the word so families know this vital resource is available, while also recruiting volunteers to assist at 10 distribution sites across multiple counties—a significant expansion from previous years.
The impact of this program is already clear. Last summer, the YMCA served an impressive 92,000 meals at just three sites. This year, with expanded operations, they expect to serve hundreds of thousands of meals, making an even greater difference in the community.
For many families, summer can bring added financial strain. Without access to free or reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches, parents often struggle to keep up with the increased cost of feeding their children. This program helps bridge that gap by providing a full week’s worth of food per child—including 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 14 cartons of milk.
Convenience is also a priority. Families can simply drive to a designated weekly pick-up location—such as local schools, churches, or parks—where volunteers load a box of food directly into their vehicle. There’s no need to get out of the car, making the process quick, easy, and accessible for everyone.
Through expanded service and community support, the YMCA of East Tennessee continues to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening families and ensuring that every child has access to the nutrition they need to thrive.
