Visitation Wednesday for Larry Gibney

Anyone who had dealings with Juvenile Court over the years has surely met Larry Gibney. After obtaining a degree in social work from the University of Tennessee, Mr. Gibney worked at the Juvenile Court for 40 years, retiring in 2011 as court director.

He died Friday, June 30, 2023, in Erwin, Tennessee, leaving his wife of 54 years, Margaret; three children and their families; and other family members and friends. The full obituary is here.

Larry was an avid reader and historian. He authored “The Church on Summit Hill,” a history of the Catholic Church in Knoxville and East Tennessee. He compiled the genealogy of the Gibney, McGuire and Shanks families. He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and more recently attended mass at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. Visitation is Wednesday, July 5, from 5-7 p.m. at Rose’s Funeral Home Broadway Chapel. Graveside service and interment by Fr. Jim Haley at Calvary Catholic Cemetery on July 6 at 10 a.m.
