June is a popular month for celebrations and raising awareness.

  • Juneteenth
  • Father’s Day
  • LGBTQIA+ Pride Month
  • Audiobook Appreciation Month

In an effort to honor all four in one article, my curated list is below.

Juneteenth and Audiobook: “Secrets. The ones we keep, inherit, and pass down without meaning to.” is the theme of The Seven Daughters of Dupree by Nikesha Elise Williams. Seven is a multigenerational saga of seven generations of the Dupree women.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Bahni Turpin and read the book. Be sure to reference the family tree found on the end pages of the book.

Father’s Day: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”- Atticus, To Kill a Mockingbird

When thinking about fatherhood, four fathers from classic literature quickly came to mind: The iconic father, Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Half Pint’s dad, Charles Ingalls, from the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder,  Paul D. Garner in Beloved by Toni Morrison, and Charles Dickens’s Bob Cratchit from A Christmas Carol.

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month: Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin is a classic novel set in 1950s Paris about a man who struggles with his own sexuality after having a secret and passionate affair with another man while his fiancé is out of town.

Share the books you think I should read in June.

Look for books at Knox County Online Library or your local independent bookstore each week.
