If you haven’t heard, Taylor and Travis did a thing last weekend.

I’ll admit I have a mild fascination with Taylor Swift, even though I’m not always sure I could name one of her songs on command. Chances are, I’ve been happily humming along to them for years without realizing it. Every now and then, I pull up the Taylor channel on Spotify just to stay a little more pop-culture aware. It’s a heavy lift, though, because my Spotify algorithm seems permanently stuck in the 1970s.

By any measure, she’s a phenomenon. You probably know the accolades better than I do, but when Harvard creates a course around your lyrics, you’ve reached a certain level of legitimacy. Then again, the University of Tennessee offered one of its most popular classes, Dolly Parton’s America, and we already knew Dolly was the real deal.

Which brings me to my point.

Taylor and Travis reportedly donated $26 million to charity in honor of their wedding, with $2 million of that total going to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Wow.

I don’t know how much of that gift will ultimately make its way to Knox County, but wow.

Thank you, Taylor and Travis. And Dolly’s response was priceless—she was genuinely blown away.

What many people don’t realize is that every Imagination Library affiliate is responsible for raising the funds needed to provide books in its own community. Here in Knox County, that means raising nearly $300,000 each year to send more than 19,000 books every month to children under age five. Those local dollars are matched dollar-for-dollar through the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation, bringing the annual investment to approximately $600,000.

It’s still one of the best returns on investment imaginable when it comes to helping young families put their children on a path toward literacy.

We’re fortunate because our program is housed within the Knox County Public Library, which covers all administrative costs, including salaries and overhead. That means every dollar donated locally goes directly toward books and postage. We love hosting the program and helping nurture young readers. And when children age out of Imagination Library, their access to books doesn’t end—it simply continues through the public library.

As exciting as a $2 million gift sounds, the truth is that Imagination Library has always been powered by people right here at home. Neighbors helping neighbors. Grandparents honoring grandchildren. Book lovers are investing in the next generation. If you’d like to celebrate literacy alongside Taylor, Travis, and Dolly, consider making a gift to the Knox County Imagination Library. Every contribution—large or small—helps place books into the hands of local children and helps build a stronger future for our community.

There’s been a lot of mixed news lately about literacy. Tennessee students have made impressive gains on TCAP assessments, yet recent reports indicate that nearly half of American adults read below a sixth-grade level. That’s concerning.

In a world filled with smartphones, endless notifications, and constant digital distractions, reading remains one of the most important skills we can develop. After all, all the information being served up every day is only valuable if we can read and understand it.

So thank you, Taylor and Travis. Thank you, Dolly.

You’re sending a powerful message that reading matters. Congratulations, best wishes, and here’s hoping for a lifetime of happily-ever-after.

And for the rest of us here in Knox County, let’s keep that message going—one book, one child, and one donation at a time.
