Politics: Raley gets state award & more

Sandra ClarkLet's Talk

Congratulations to Jackie Raley, chief deputy assessor and a candidate for property assessor of Knox County in 2024. Raley was honored by the Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers as 2022 chief deputy assessor of the year.

TAAO president Erinne Hestor said Raley exemplifies “the highest standards of professionalism and dedication in service to the citizens of Knox County.”

Will Denami, executive director of the association, said “Jackie brings a positive attitude and a team approach to the office and her talents continue to pay dividends for the taxpayers of Knox County.” Denami noted that Raley had also won this award in 2019.

Raley said Knox County has a great team and it starts with Assessor John Whitehead. “I feel fortunate to be able to work with so many really good people and to perform an important service to our community and the taxpayers who rely upon us.”

Raley will officially kick off her campaign Wednesday, March 29, 5-7 p.m. at Calhoun’s on the River. There is no fine print on the invite. In letters as large as “you’re invited,” the card says “Paid for by the Committee to Elect Jackie Raley, John Whitehead treasurer.”

Notes

Cameron Brooks will kick off his campaign today (3/9/23) at 6 p.m. at the Beck Cultural Center. He’s running for at-large Seat A on Knoxville City Council. The seat is held by Lynne Fugate who has announced she is running for a second term. Brooks is a real estate agent with Realty Executives Associates, an active Democrat and a former union organizer.

Former Trustee Ed Shouse has taken a part-time job with FirstBank, coming full circle. He began his career in the banking business before going into trains with Pete Claussen and then politics. Now he’s back to banking, working in business development.

Personal privilege: We will (hopefully) publish Nick McBride’s real estate report along with a profile I’m writing about Kelly Absher on Friday this week, rather than the usual Thursday. Coworkers say nobody but me knows we have this schedule, but I take it seriously.

Correction: We misspoke in the March 8 East Knox Youth blog. The Carter High School Foundation gala is today (3/9/23). And Conley Underwood puts ticket sales at 212 – a very successful first-ever event.

Knoxville City Council members were in Nashville to meet with legislators. Pictured are: Charles Thomas, Lynne Fugate, Andrew Roberto, Lauren Rider, Tommy Smith and Seema Singh. Sens. Becky Massey and Richard Briggs, joined by Reps. Dave Wright, Sam McKenzie, Justin Lafferty, Gloria Johnson and Elaine Davis, hosted the council members for lunch.
