In the misty rain along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Bear Trap Overlook, Badger assumed the role of photographer and stepped out with my Canon R6 Mark II and RF 24-105 lens and captured this early June scene. The vibrant Catawba rhododendrons glowed in the foreground against layered mountain ridges fading into fog – a classic Southern Appalachian moment that made braving the spring weather more than worth it.

Drawing from my ongoing study of the Hudson River School – the 19th-century American art movement founded by Thomas Cole and celebrated for its romantic, luminous depictions of nature – I’m striving to  infuse my images with that same sense of grandeur and timeless beauty. The result turns a foggy overlook into something almost painterly, blending natural detail with an evolving artistic vision.

These scenes remind me why I keep returning to these mountains. Rain or shine, I’ll keep getting out there, elevating our shared Southern Appalachian landscape through thoughtful editing and a deep artistic eye. As Badger says: “Keep chasing the light, man!”
