State Sen. Becky Massey officially kicked off her re-election campaign Sunday (11/10) with a family- and dog-friendly event at Lakeshore Park.

Chris Blue and the New Life Gathering worship band entertained. Massey said she wanted a kick-off event that was “informal, fun and welcoming to everyone.”

Massey represents Senate District 6, which swings around the county from Halls to Corryton to Carter to South Knox County to Concord. It’s the district that was represented for many years by the late Sen. Ben Atchley, and later was represented by Sen. Jamie Woodson.

Massey won a special election in 2011 to fill the vacant seat. She was re-elected to a full term in 2012 and in 2016. She chairs the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee and is a member of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee.

Sen. Richard Briggs represents District 7, which includes most of West Knoxville and communities inside the corporate limits of Knoxville. Sen. Randy McNally, who serves as lieutenant governor, represents north and northwest Knox County along with Anderson County.

Briggs, McNally, Sen. Todd Gardenhire from Chattanooga and Sen. Art Swann, who represents Blount and Sevier counties, attended the kick-off in support of Massey.

Massey retired in 2017 after serving for 24 years as executive director of the Sertoma Center in Knoxville. She remains active in the community and has served on boards for the Akima Club of Knoxville, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the University of Tennessee Alumni Chapter in Knoxville. Massey graduated from UT in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She serves on the UT College of Nursing Advisory Board and is a graduate of Leadership Knoxville and Leadership Tennessee. She is a Henry Toll Fellow after completing one of the country’s premier leadership development programs for state government officials. Massey is a member of New Life Gathering Church and the Downtown Sertoma Club.
