Many of us grew up hearing mama sayings that seemed simple at the time but carried deep wisdom. One of those timeless phrases is: “Why borrow trouble?”
The saying reminds us not to worry about problems that have not happened yet. So often, people spend hours imagining worst-case scenarios, stressing over “what ifs,” and carrying burdens that may never come to pass. Mama’s wisdom was simple: life already brings enough challenges without adding imaginary ones to the load.
“Borrowing trouble” happens when we let fear about tomorrow steal peace from today. We replay conversations that haven’t happened, assume bad news before hearing facts, or convince ourselves that disaster is around every corner. In many cases, the thing we worried about never happens at all.
Jesus taught a similar lesson in Scripture when He said:
“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” — Matthew 6:34
That verse perfectly captures the heart of Mama’s saying. God calls people to trust Him one day at a time rather than carry fears about an unknown future.
In a world filled with nonstop news, social media anxiety, and pressure to plan every detail, “Why borrow trouble?” encourages people to slow down, focus on what can actually be handled today, and trust tomorrow to take care of itself.
It doesn’t mean ignoring real problems or avoiding responsibility. Instead, it means refusing to carry emotional weight that does not yet belong to us. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is pray, take a deep breath, do what we can, and leave the rest in God’s hands.
As mama knew all along, peace often begins when we stop borrowing trouble we were never meant to carry.
What Mama said: Life lessons you didn’t know you needed—until Mama said them.
