It’s summer, and everyone is traveling somewhere. Our family is spending the summer at travel sports tournaments and the beach. We have discovered that a few simple hotel room tricks can make your stay more comfortable, safer, and even save you money, whether you’re staying at a luxury resort or a roadside motel.

Limited outlets? If outlets are scarce, check inside the closet or behind the desk. These often have unused plugs perfect for charging phones, tablets, and cameras overnight.

Gap in the curtains? Ever been awakened by a beam of sunlight sneaking through a gap in the curtains? Use a pants hanger with clips—or even a clothespin if you have one—to keep curtains tightly closed.

Need extra workspace? The desk is occupied, but an ironing board can be adjusted to the perfect height for a laptop, whether standing or sitting.

Need extra pillows and blankets? Before calling the front desk, look in the closet or under the bed. Many hotels store extra bedding there.

Dirty shoes to pack? The disposable shower cap found in many hotel bathrooms is perfect for covering dirty shoes before packing them in your suitcase.

More than an ice bucket? The bucket can double as a beverage cooler, a container for hand-washing clothes, or even a temporary holder for snacks.

The next time you check into a hotel, try a few of these insider tips and enjoy a smoother stay.

Everyday Genius will provide little tricks every week. Big wins.
