Carl Stiner: Country boy to four-star

Retired U.S. Army General Carl W. Stiner passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at age 85. After traveling the world, he and wife Sue returned to LaFollette in retirement. You can read of Gen. Stiner’s distinguished military career here.

In June 1990, he was promoted to the rank of (four-star) General and became the second Commander in Chief of the United States Special Operations Command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. In this role, he was responsible for the readiness of all special operations forces of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, both active duty and reserve forces, during Operation Desert Storm.

His legacy is secured by this quote: “When someone asks who is or who was Carl Stiner, tell them he was a country boy who grew up in this valley and had the honor to serve the greatest country on earth. Yes, just tell them that.”

Family will welcome friends on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of LaFollette, 255 West Central Ave. Following the visitation, the service will be held at the church with full military honors. Formal interment will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens 206 Henson Rd. General Stiner will lie in state at Cross-Smith Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. today (06/10).
