Before the Green

Christopher RobinOur Town Arts, Sevier

Springtime in the Smokies is a terrific time to photograph. Each species of plant seems to have its own private contrasting shade of green. Even with our recent warm weather, however, we will still have to wait a few more weeks for the spring colors.

That does not mean that the mountains and valleys are void of color. There are a variety of subtle hues of reds, browns and golds. One color that is very vibrant and stands out even in the winter is green. Each rain brings the moss of the mountains, rocks and trees to life.

Last week I photographed this old spring house at Ely’s Mill on the Roaring Fork just yards outside the national park. The layers of moss add color to the drab old stones and make it a more interesting subject.

Ask my sisters sometime why seeing the moss takes away my appetite. See if they will fess up to their evil ways.

We will be in studio until 9 p.m. March 3 for the First Friday Art Walk, come in and say hi.

Photographer Chris and painter Robin Rohwer each week share a painting or photograph that captured their interest in hopes that it will also capture yours. They have a small studio and gallery in the Phoenix Building at 418 South Gay Street where you can stop and see their work.
