Zoo Knoxville is proud to announce it has successfully maintained its accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) following a comprehensive five-year review process, reaffirming the zoo’s long-standing commitment to the highest standards of animal care, conservation, education, and guest experience.
Zoo Knoxville has been accredited by AZA for decades, a distinction held by only a select group of zoological institutions across North America.
Accreditation by AZA is a rigorous process that occurs every five years and involves a detailed application, on-site inspections by a team of experts, and a thorough review by an independent accreditation commission. Facilities must meet strict standards in animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation programs, staff training, safety, and education efforts.
“This achievement is a reflection of the dedication and expertise of our entire team,” said Bill Street, President and CEO of Zoo Knoxville. “From the care our animals receive to the impact of our global conservation efforts, this recognition reflects the meaningful work happening here every day.”
Zoo Knoxville plays a vital role in wildlife conservation both locally and globally, supporting efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats. The zoo is internationally recognized for its leadership in species survival programs, including its work with red pandas, rhinos, and several other threatened species.
AZA accreditation ensures that institutions not only provide exceptional care for animals but also make meaningful contributions to conservation science and public education. Learn more about Zoo Knoxville’s conservation efforts at zooknoxville.org.
