Sunday, April 12, is D.E.A.R. Drop Everything And Read Day, a fun, literacy-focused day tied to a beloved author, Beverly Cleary’s birthday.
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day is a nationwide celebration encouraging people of all ages to pause their day and read. The day is connected to Beverly Cleary, the creator of iconic characters like Henry Huggins and Ramona Quimby.
The Henry Huggins series centers on Henry, an ordinary boy whose life becomes more exciting after he adopts a scruffy dog named Ribsy. While Henry wants independence and adventure, he often ends up in funny predicaments, with much of the action revolving around Ribsy, whose unpredictable behavior leads to chaos—getting lost, chasing things, or causing trouble.
Ramona becomes Henry’s friend later in the series, and the two, along with Beezus, a character from the Ramona Quimby books, experience everyday kid adventures—paper routes, school projects, and neighborhood escapades.
The Ramona Quimby books evolve from Ramona’s side character role in Henry Huggins. The series follows Ramona from preschool through elementary school as she navigates growing up in a very Ramona way—curious, stubborn, imaginative, and often unintentionally mischievous as she struggles to understand rules, expectations, and why adults don’t always see things her way. Her family faces everyday challenges too, including money worries and her father losing his job.
Look for this recommendations and other books at Knox County Online Library or your local independent bookstore each week.
