What’s blooming in the Smokies

Wildflower report – Porters Creek Trail (B-E) 1 May 2023

  • Bar Cucumber – (1)
  • Bishop Caps – Some – Mostly past peak bloom (many almost gone).
  • Black Berry – Some – Mixed stages in the blooming cycle.
  • Brook Lettuce – Some – Slightly past peak bloom.
  • Common Cinquefoil – Some – Most blooms closed (?).
  • Canadian Violet – Many – Some at peak bloom – some past peak bloom – still nice.
  • Clinton Lily – Many – At peak boom.
  • Dog Hobble – Many – At peak bloom (mostly lower elevations).
  • False Solomon Seals – Many ++ – Mostly at peak bloom in higher elevations – past peak lower elevations.
  • Foam Flower – Many – Status of blooms varies according to elevation.
  • Indian Cucumber Root – Some – appear past their peak in the blooming process.

  • Little Brown Jugs – Some
  • Long Spurred Violet – Few – Past peak bloom.
  • May Apple –
  • Meadow Parsnip – Many – Close to being at peak bloom.
  • Painted Trillium – (1) – At peak bloom (a thrill to find).
  • Prostate Bluets – (2 patches together) – At peak bloom about 3 miles up the trail.
  • Robins Plantain – Many – Well past peak bloom (almost gone).

  • Squaw Root – Few – Past peak bloom.
  • Stone Crop – Many – Mostly past peak bloom.
  • Sweet Cicely – Some – In the early blooming stage.
  • Sweet Shrub – (1 shrub with blooms) – At peak bloom.
  • Toothwort – Few – Right at peak bloom.
  • Trillium Erect – Few – Well past peak bloom – almost gone – last half mile of trail.
  • Umbrella Magnolia – Some – Appear to be approaching peak bloom.
  • White Fringed Phacelia – Very few – Almost gone – well past peak bloom.
  • White Violets – Many – At peak bloom (Sweet White Violets as best as I can tell).
  • Wild Blue Phlox – Few – Mostly at peak bloom.
  • Wild Geranium – Many – Mostly past peak bloom but still very beautiful/colorful.
  • Wild Ginger – Few – Past peak bloom.
  • Yellow Trillium – Many – Past peak bloom (mostly on the 1st mile of the trail).
