West Hills park to expand (and more)

Sandra ClarkOur Town Neighbors, West Knox County, West Knoxville

West Hills walkers (and now bikers) will have a wooded trail expansion with city crews expected to start in October 2022.

“The city’s Parks and Recreation Department has updated the schedule for building the wooded hiking trail and bike facility in West Hills Park, according to the West Hills Community Association website.

“Construction of the new bike facility/obstacle training has not been announced, but is expected to also begin this fall. The department is replacing the toddler playground along the greenway and has two different play structure designs, but community voting on which to build ended Oct. 7,” according to the website.

Obviously, we need to check it more often.

Pickleball tournament set

The WHES Wolfpack Foundation is excited to announce two upcoming events for our community to enjoy!

The first is a Pickleball Tournament that will be held at our neighborhood courts on November 5. Registration is $50 per team with women’s, men’s and mixed doubles available. The second event will be held on January 27 at The Lighthouse Knoxville, which is 5 minutes from our neighborhood on Baum Drive. This will be an adult-only event for anyone wanting to support the Wolfpack Foundation. Come prepared to enjoy a night of dinner, entertainment and fellowship with neighbors.

We look forward to the success of both of these events. Save the dates. If you would like to help, email Katy Bibee. This information was posted by Elizabeth Evola, WHCA parks committee co-chair and president WHES Wolfpack Foundation.

Western Heights Head Start opens today

The new Head Start Center in Western Heights will officially open today (10/18/22) with officials cutting a ribbon at 2 p.m. The center, at 1101 W. Oldham Ave., will provide comprehensive preschool programs for 130 neighborhood children from infant to age 5.

The Head Start is aligned with KCDC’s upcoming transformation of the Western Heights site and Beaumont neighborhood through the Transforming Western initiative, a comprehensive planning process for the future of Western Heights housing, neighborhood and people. The 14-month process culminated with KCDC being awarded a $40 million HUD Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant in September to help fund neighborhood transformation.
