Independence 250 Concert on the Fourth

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center invites the community to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with the Independence 250 Concert on the Fourth, an evening of patriotic music, living history and family fun commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The celebration will include musical salutes to the flag, George M. Cohan, the military branches and the founders. It includes singing from soloists, and a special appearance by the Military Voices of East Tennessee. Led by conductor Danny Griffin, the program features Sousa marches, Appalachian-themed music and a tribute to active-duty military personnel and veterans.

Admission is a suggested $10 donation to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the concert starting at 8 p.m. There will be complimentary American flags for the first 300 guests.

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is located at 123 Cromwell Dr., Townsend, Tennessee.

The concert concludes in time for attendees to enjoy the fireworks display in downtown Townsend.

$330,000 gift for Maryville parks

Foothills Land Conservancy (FLC) will present $330,000 in funding to the city of Maryville during the Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Maryville City Council meeting, supporting improvements at Jarvis Park and Billy Minser Park through gifts made by conservation-minded East Tennessee families and longtime FLC supporters.

The funding includes $130,000 for a new pavilion at Jarvis Park and $200,000 for improvements at Billy Minser Park.

The new pavilion at Jarvis Park will provide permanent gathering space for community events, recreation activities, educational programming and family gatherings. Jarvis Park, a 17-acre public park in Maryville, is protected through a conservation easement held by FLC.

An additional $200,000 will support Billy Minser Park, a project made possible through a generous gift from the late Dr. Catherine Gilreath. The park is named in honor of longtime FLC board member Billy Minser, recognizing decades of service to conservation efforts and the East Tennessee community.

The presentation highlights how conservation partnerships can create benefits that extend beyond land protection alone. Through charitable gifts, conservation easements and collaborative community projects, FLC continues to support both the preservation of East Tennessee’s natural resources and the communities that enjoy them.
