The joys of ‘plein air’ painting

Christopher RobinOur Town Arts

An offer of painting an abandoned farm with the innocence of an early spring day was all our plein air painting group needed to tease out a painting or two. It’s the unexpected that gets me out, with a heavy pack, a long umbrella, sunscreen and bug spray. You might compare it to a fisherman or golfer with their gear and perseverance.

Arriving at this unfamiliar place with dew still wet on the long grass, I stomped around said grass peering into a few barns, silos and peeked into the old farmhouse. For just a moment I could smell the country ham and biscuits, hear the sounds of tinkering and sputtering tractors and feel the doughy embrace of the mama’s aproned hug. It helps to feel the place before I paint. After surveying a few choices, I chose a front yard mountain view. When I look at this, I still smell ham.

Photographer Chris and painter Robin Rohwer each week share a painting or photograph that captured their interest in hopes that it will also capture yours. They have a small studio and gallery in the Phoenix Building at 418 South Gay Street where you can stop and see their work. Their website is www.ChristopherRobinArts.com. All works are copyright protected.
