Our tour of South Knoxville will begin by crossing the Tennessee River on the Henley Bridge which has also been known as the George Dempster Bridge. The bridge was completed in 1931 as a city-sponsored project that was the earlier vision of City Manager George Dempster, who later invented our famous “Dempster Dumpster.”
The Henley Bridge is considered one of Knoxville’s great architectural achievements and although its upper platform has been rebuilt, the concrete piers and arches remain original. Return to this section next week for our next South Knox tour stop!
