Solitude

Five million visitors. Five million visitors a year go to Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some come to check it off a list, for some it is their only touch of nature. For me it is a need to feel the sight, smells, touch the land of our forebears. The rich history feels like hallowed ground.

February is a nice month to paint with the ochre and sage green, the red grasses and the textures of the Cove. She is known for showing off her splendid colors, but I like to see her more intimately, as she readies for the millions.

This 24×24 painting was done from a photo taken on a peaceful February day with no one in sight. How does that happen in a place with so many visitors? Blessed by fate and solitude, I reckon.
