Harold Julian wrote about a dog named Yardstick.

Clever moniker for a mutt with three feet.

He wrote about another named Tripod. You guessed it. More dry wit.

Mr. Julian, who died Sunday at age 95, got phone calls occasionally from Donald Duck. Mr. Duck, a KUB employee from Strawberry Plains, became a reader and tongue-in-cheek critic.

Mr. Julian graduated from Young High School in 1945 and joined the Navy in the final months of World War II. He earned a bachelor’s in journalism at UT in 1954 and embarked on a career in newspapering – two stints at the Knoxville Journal, two at the Times Gazette in Shelbyville plus one at the Nashville Tennessean before landing at the News Sentinel for more than 30 years as copy editor and columnist. He retired 34 years ago.

Harold and his wife, Ada, became guides for Knoxville Tours and traveled to all states in the United States.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (5/10/23) at Berry Funeral Home chapel on Chapman Highway; funeral service at 3 and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Full obituary is here.

Thanks to Roland Julian for his contribution to this story.
