Charles A. Maner Jr., 77, left this world peacefully on May 8. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Click Funeral Home, 9020 Middlebrook Pike. A brief service will follow. The full obituary is here.

Mr. Maner, just 30, sported stylishly long hair, bow ties and cowboy boots when he was first elected Knox County law director in 1972. He had two young kids and a wife named Corky. He won re-election twice. But suddenly, in 1982, he suffered a debilitating stroke. He took early retirement, having lost mobility and needing time to organize his thoughts before speaking.
He never lost his interest in local politics. Bud Armstrong, the county’s current law director, said he was quick to take Charlie’s calls. He respected his legal acumen and knowledge of political lore.
Charlie Maner was an inspiration to many. Although his career was cut short, he kept his sense of humor and battled back against various physical ailments. No one could doubt his love for his family.
