Registration is open for middle school student teams to compete in the 2025 Future City STEM Competition, sponsored by LDA Engineering.

This year’s theme is Above the Current, and middle school student teams are charged with designing a floating city while keeping citizens healthy and safe. Participants have the opportunity to win awards and vie for a spot at the national competition.

This is the eighth consecutive year that LDA Engineering has hosted and participated in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program, with team members volunteering as mentors, judging entries and helping to coordinate the regional event.

“It’s always rewarding to work with bright young minds and see what they can envision to engineer cities of the future using STEM principles,” said Jason Brooks, CEO of LDA Engineering. “Our company is committed to advancing STEM and engineering education, and this event is a great opportunity to help support that mission in our community.”

2023 first place regional winner: “Lagos” team from Annoor Academy of Knoxville including Imran Fahmi, Adam Mourad, Muhedin Hashani, Lubna Doleh and Yasmeen Aqqad.

The regional event will be held January 11, 2025, at the Zeanah Engineering Complex at the University of Tennessee Tickle College of Engineering. The winning team advances to the finals in Washington, D.C. Last year, a team from Annoor Academy in Knoxville took the top regional honor and competed in the nation’s capital.

Registration is available here and closes Oct. 31, 2024. Teams are required to submit essays, project plans and models ahead of the competition. There is no cost for students to participate thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors.

LDA Engineering hosts a Future City Golf Tournament each year to help support the competition. The firm encourages businesses who are passionate about enhancing STEM education to partner or contribute.

“These young people are the future of STEM professions and our communities, and this is a great opportunity to inspire them,” Brooks said. “We can’t wait to see what they are able to imagine and create.”

LDA Engineering continues to support STEM through its $500,000 commitment to STEM education and dedicated $120,000 in college scholarship funds.

Future City is a nonprofit powered by DiscoverE, dedicated to providing global resources, programs and connections between K-12 students and STEM professionals. The competition is open to teams of three or more students in sixth, seventh or eighth grade.
