Martin Mill landfill request withdrawn

There will be no construction-and-demolition landfill at 6121 Martin Mill Pike. At Thursday’s Metropolitan Planning Commission meeting, the application by Blount Excavating was withdrawn in the face of strong community disapproval backed up by alarming environmental concerns.

More than 15 neighbors and members of the Mount Olive Community Organization were there and cheered for the action.

Marketplace coming to Tea & Treasures

Tea & Treasures, 4104 W. Martin Mill Pike, will hold its Second Saturday Marketplace 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 14. Outdoor vendors will offer a variety of items including arts and crafts, plants and antiques. New vendors are welcome. The event is free to the public.

Candidates to meet, greet at Ijams

The South Knoxville Alliance will host a Candidate Meet & Greet at 6 p.m. Monday, July 16, at Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Ave. The event will feature candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, District 2, and state representative, District 19.

Candidates for the congressional seat expected to attend are Tim Burchett, Jason Emert, Hank Hamblin, Renee Hoyos, Jimmy Matlock, Sarah Ashley Nickloes, Vito Sagliano and Joshua Williams. State House candidates will be Edward Wilson, Dallas Sivley, Donald Wiser and Dave Wright.

The public is invited.

Harrison wraps up Ijams series

Mic Harrison & the High Score will perform at the final Ijams Sunday Summer Concert for 2018. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the concert starts at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Ave.

The band is known for “a combination of high-octane honky tonk and power pop rock ’n’ roll that has wowed audiences from Bonnaroo to Boston.”

Admission is $8. Children under 5 are admitted free. Food trucks and a beer garden will be open for the event.

Dailey sets Ask the Commissioner event

County Commissioner Carson Dailey will hold his monthly Ask the Commissioner session Tuesday, July 31, at Love That B-B-Q, 1901 Maryville Pike. All residents of District 9 are welcome to attend. The meeting will run 5-6:30 p.m. and will be a drop-in format. Food is Dutch treat.
