Lifelong learning: The big dill

Sandra ClarkLet's Talk

Pellissippi State Community College has opened enrollment for non-credit spring classes. See the catalog here. OK, so there are classes ranging from motorcycle riding to line dancing to hand guns to photography. But is that really a reason for the bad pun below:

If you’ve heard people talking about pickleball, you’re probably wondering what the big dill is? This spring, learn the rules of the game, how to play and join the growing community of pickleball players in our beginner and intermediate clinics. Start having fun today! (Booooo)

My friends are thrilled with time off from school and work to celebrate Thanksgiving. And that’s good. But it’s hard not to see this work week as stuffing five days into three.

Coach Kellie Harper and the women’s basketball team got a signature win at home Sunday, beating Texas 74-70 in overtime. Tennessee outscored the Longhorns 20-10 in the fourth quarter to force the OT and then 15-11 in the overtime for the win. Both teams came into the game with 3-0 records and top 20 rankings. Texas left 3-1 and Tennessee rolls on, 4-0.

Some good people left us over the past week: Mike Haynes, who worked for me at the Halls Shopper while he was in high school. How did he get to be 58? Jim Williams, athlete and educator, school board member and all-around good guy. Darryl Peele, smiling and steady, he worked with his mother, Jean, at The Green Thumb garden center and later was a department manager at the Halls Walmart. Maynard Lowery who gambled that he could repair enough cars and sell enough tires to occupy the entire side of the building where W.T. Grant had been (now Food City). With help from sons Wally and David, he built his own building on Cunningham Road for Halls Service Center. Maynard outlasted W.T. Grant.
