Avid readers are always searching for their next read and usually have a line item for book purchases in the budget. To keep that particular line item in check, I find ways to source free books. The best resource is always the local library.
My local library uses the Libby by Overdrive app for patrons to borrow ebooks, audiobooks and magazines. Think of the Libby app as a digital library you carry in your pocket. It is completely free to use with a library card, and your borrowed items sync across all your devices. (Other libraries may use hoopla or cloudLibrary.)

Every Saturday, I receive the Libby Life newsletter in my inbox. Libby Life (https://www.libbylife.com) is a blog and content hub for book recommendations, library news and trends, author interviews, and Libby app tips and tricks. There is even a podcast, Book Lounge by Libby. The weekly newsletter helps readers make the most of the content offered on the Libby app.
For example, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, and the writers of Libby Life share books featuring or written by AAPIs this month. If reading trends are of interest, look for the monthly post about the most borrowed library books.
One tip I love and use often is the sharing option. As The Book Whisperer, I am constantly talking about and recommending books. When a friend says, “Oh, that sounds interesting,” I click the share button on the book in the Libby app and send a thumbnail link to my friend on the spot.
If you have ever considered joining a book club but worried about the commitment, consider Libby Reads, a global ebook club. All you need is a valid library card to join readers around the world reading the same book at the same time. Be as involved as you want. Post in the discussion board. Join the Zoom call with the author. In April, I learned about the most recent Libby Reads pick, Familia by Lauren E. Tico, and immediately checked out the ebook and audiobook. No wait time! Look for my review of Familia next week.
If you have been tempted to explore reading ebooks or reading with your ears, now is the time to try. Download the Libby app from the App Store and type in your library card number to get started. It is free!
Look for books at Knox County Online Library or your local independent bookstore each week.
