Gun shop headed for East Knoxville

Smoky Mountain Knife Works calls itself the world’s largest knife store. Maybe it is.

“If it cuts, we carry it,” reads the slogan. “Welcome to the knife store with the largest in-stock, on-hand selection of knives for sale.”

Located on Gov. Winfield Dunn Parkway in Sevier County, SMKW has over 108,000 square feet of showroom space and some 12,000 knives. See the store’s video here.

Now it appears that Smoky Mountain Knife Works is opening a gun shop off Asheville Highway.

For years the former Food Lion building at 6221 Riverview Crossing Drive (a business spur parallel to Asheville Highway) sat empty. Now the property is quietly being transformed into Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo – what may become the largest gun and ammunition store in Knox County.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works is apparently branching out with this new endeavor. The 6-acre site is close to I-40 and John Sevier Highway. The old grocery store has some 37,362 square feet of floor space and is connected to several busy shops, like Papa John’s and Subway sandwich shop.

According to KGIS and the Property Assessor’s Office, the entire complex is owned by SMGA, and it has plenty of land to expand here in the future.

Workers on-site say that the interior build-out for the shop should be completed sometime in March 2022. Perhaps there will be a late spring opening? Will other businesses join this new hotspot?
