Chef Alex Gass opened Fire & Salt in 2022 in Oak Ridge, his hometown. He says, “Food Is Joy!” and specializes in locally sourced seasonal ingredients. As the restaurant has grown, Billy Krebs was added as executive chef.

I must confess that I had not heard of this restaurant. Just got over to Aspire for lunch recently. But I checked the menu and put it on my must-do list.

Chef Gass says food has always been a big part of his life. Whether it was smoking meats with his Uncle Jim or cooking for church dinners with his aunt and grandmother, he enjoyed food.

“Food has become a way to honor those that I have lost, be creative and connect with people. With the support of my wife, Jessica, and our kids Trinity and Jasper I have created a place to do just that every day. To me, food is joy. I am honored to be able to share this with my guests as the founding chef of Fire & Salt.”

Notes & Quotes

Quote: Nothing is more satisfying than to write a good sentence. It is no fun to write lumpishly, dully, in prose the reader must plod through like wet sand. But it is a pleasure to achieve, if one can, a clear running prose that is simple yet full of surprises. This does not just happen. It requires skill, hard work, a good ear and continued practice. – Barbara Tuchman, historian
