Fall mailers ahead

Note: This is a personal blog about the creation of Knox TN Today and what we’re all about.

Knox TN Today has three mailers ahead:

Sept. 25 – West Hills – All of ZIP 37909 and three carrier routes in 37919. Total 10,050

Oct. 23 – Northshore/Choto – 17 routes of ZIP 37922 – 10,180

Nov. 20 – Farragut – All routes of ZIP 37934 – 11,201

Why do the mailers?

  • After 40-plus years of producing a weekly newspaper (starting in 1971 with the Halls Shopper), we enjoy the work.
  • Targeted direct mail is great for our advertisers.
  • We’re aiming to attract regular readers to www.knoxtntoday.com by showing what we offer – online every day.

After every mailer, the phone rings with folks wanting to subscribe. We’re not selling subscriptions; and we can’t go back to producing a weekly newspaper. It’s just not cost effective. But I would like to stretch to 12 mailers – one a month – in 2020. We did six in 2019, reaching more than 60,000 homes, but there are areas not yet served. Strapping on the selling hat to scare up revenue to make that happen. Stay tuned.

Sports Notes: Not sure what Coach Pruitt will do next, but I recall a lesson from coach Pat Summitt. I’ve attended just two Final Fours – LA in 1984 and Austin in 1987. The West Coast trip was fun, but Tennessee just didn’t have enough to beat Southern Cal – which boasted Cheryl Miller and the twins, Paula and Pam McGee. Toward the end of the championship game, which UT lost by 11, Pat cleared the bench and pulled her seniors – including the great Mary Ostrowski, who was setting national records for scoring and free throws during the tournament.

I was pretty mad that Pat didn’t battle with her best players until the end. But I never forgot what she did – she looked toward the future rather than the moment. And some of those freshmen she played in LA were seniors in ’87 when Pat won Tennessee’s first basketball national championship. (Of course, recruiting Bridgette Gordon didn’t hurt!)

Go Vols!
