The Tennessee Board of Regents approved its college system budget for next year and reviewed reports on enrollment and graduation figures during its fall quarterly meeting Sept. 23, 2022, at the Hardin Valley Campus of Pellissippi State.

The Tennessee Board of Regents governs the state’s 13 public community colleges and 24 colleges of applied technology. Details of the board meeting are here.

Briefly, PSCC is one of four community colleges that will share $2.2 million for a pilot project, “Reimagining the Community College Experience.” Programs will start in fall 2023.

Enrollment is down at community colleges. Preliminary numbers show 70,313 students enrolled in for-credit courses at the 13 community colleges – 4,230 fewer than in fall 2021 and 18,633 fewer than in fall 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Graduation and enrollment data for the colleges of applied technology, which are based on a calendar year, will be reported at the December board meeting. But preliminary data indicate that 12,804 students are registered at the colleges of applied technology, an increase of 1,388 students over fall 2021.

Math whiz

Jonah Weston

Congratulations to PSCC student Jonah Weston, 16, for placing first in the Southeast region – and ninth in the nation – in the 2021-2022 Student Mathematics League competition.

Jonah was a dual enrollment student at Pellissippi State when he took the two-part test last year. He has already taken 30 hours of college credit here, and this is his first semester as a full-time college student. Way to go!
