Layering salad in a jar — often called a “mason jar salad” — feels like a modern life hack, but its roots go back to the 1800s. Home cooks have used glass jars — popularized by Ball Mason Jars — for canning and storing food, and the idea of stacking ingredients in a jar to preserve freshness has long been part of practical kitchen habits.
The specific “salad in a jar” method took off in the early 2010s, driven by busy lifestyles and the rise of weekly meal prep like we have in today’s recipe for a Mediterranean ‘salad in a jar.’
Mediterranean Meal Prep Salad

- ¾ cup Farro, prepared according to package directions
- 1 ½ cups chick peas
- 1 ½ cups cucumber, diced
- 1 ½ cups carrots, shredded
- 1 ½ cups mozzarella pearls or feta cheese
- 1 ½ cups cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1 ½ cups Romaine lettuce, chopped
- ½ cup White Balsamic or Greek Salad Dressing, divided
Directions
