There are times when we spend so much energy dreaming about the next big vacation that we overlook the treasures sitting just a few hours from home.

That thought came to me recently as Knox the Fox climbed aboard for another adventure, this time joining our friends, Aneisa and Curtis Rolen, for a day in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Blue Ridge has found a way to blend mountain charm with small-town hospitality. Brick sidewalks invite you to slow your pace. Antique stores spill onto the sidewalks with vintage wagons, weathered signs and treasures waiting for someone who appreciates a little history. Every storefront seems to have its own personality.

One shop might be filled with handmade gifts, another with antiques that spark memories from years ago. We wandered from store to store, never quite knowing what we’d discover next, while Knox the Fox seemed just as interested in exploring as the rest of us.

Then came one of the day’s surprises.

The Expedition: Bigfoot! Sasquatch Museum isn’t something you expect to find in a mountain town, but there it was. Giant carved Sasquatch figures stood outside with hiking packs on their backs, ready for photographs. Whether you believe the legends or simply enjoy a good mystery, it’s impossible not to smile when you see them.

A short drive brought us to Mercier Orchards, where rows of apple trees rolled across the hills overlooking a peaceful lake. The family-owned orchard has been welcoming visitors since 1943, and it’s easy to understand why people return year after year. Fresh fruit, baked goods, cider and mountain views make it much more than a place to shop.

Of course, no road trip is complete without finding a memorable place to eat.

That honor belonged to The Rum Cake Lady Cuban Café.

The aroma greeted us before we even stepped inside. Authentic Cuban sandwiches, fresh sides and some of the best rum cakes you’ll ever taste made it an easy favorite. Naturally, a few rum cakes came home with us, although they didn’t last nearly as long as we had planned.

What I appreciated most about the day wasn’t one particular stop.

It was the pace.

There was no rush to beat traffic, no pressure to keep moving and no crowded schedule to follow. Just enjoying good conversation, discovering unique shops, sharing great food and taking in the beauty of the North Georgia mountains—with Knox the Fox happily tagging along for another adventure.

Sometimes we think a memorable getaway has to involve a plane ticket or a week away from home.

Blue Ridge reminded me that some of the best adventures are waiting just down the road. They happen when you slow down, spend time with people you enjoy and leave enough room in the day for unexpected discoveries.

After all, the destination is only part of the journey.

The memories are made by the company you keep.
