The Blue Ridge Mountains deliver one of the Southern Appalachians’ finest seasonal shows: the successive blooming of our endemic rhododendron. Peak bloom for the two is generally thirty days apart. In the spring and summer of 2026, Badger’s representative images capture a sampling of the annual transition. Catawba Rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) Early/ Mid May to Early June 2026

The Catawba rhododendron paints higher elevation slopes and balds with bright pink-to-magenta clusters in May and June. These hardy evergreen shrubs thrive on exposed ridges and form the backbone of the region’s famous natural displays , such as the Roan Mountain and Craggy Rhododendron Gardens.

Local Cherokee and Catawba traditions recall the flowers originally blooming pure white. A fierce intertribal battle was said to have stained the ground with blood, transforming it to its signature crimson and pink/purple hues – a living reminder of the land’s history and resilience. Their presence was historically seen as bringing luck and fostering protection.

Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) – Early July 2026

By early July, the larger Rosebay rhododendron takes over with substantial trusses in white to softer pinks. Preferring varied elevations and moister sites, it extends the colorful season across the Blue Ridge. The approximate thirty-day offset between Catawba and Rosebay highlights how the two species together prolong what is called “The Season of Bloom.”

These paired images from similar high country vantage points remind us that the Southern Appalachians are alive with shifting color and light and always tell a story!
