Adam Hasan: Curling in Scotland

Adam Hasan, the Bearden High School graduate who was the 2014-15 student representative to the Knox County school board, brags about his home town so much that friends at the University of North Carolina have nicknamed him “The Mayor” (of Knoxville).

He’s home for a brief summer visit before heading to Brooklyn to work for Alex Washburn, chief of urban planning in the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He’s freshly returned from a semester of study in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he went after attending Habitat III, a United Nations conference in Ecuador. He spent the summer of 2016 in South Africa working for Habitat for Humanity.

A rising junior, he hasn’t decided exactly what he wants to do when he graduates, and is torn between going to law school and pursuing urban planning.

Hasan, who was known for his signature bow ties and interests in coffee roasting and the sport of curling, enjoyed his time in Scotland and said part of the reason he went there was to pursue his curling skills.

“I was curling once a week with people who’d been doing it for 14 years,” he said. “I’m a lot better at it now.”

He is non-committal about the notion of eventually coming home and running for mayor. The world’s a big place, and he figures he’s still got a lot of horizons to explore. But he says he still loves Knoxville.
