A winter interlude at the end of summer

This image is the “Murphy Tree,” apparently named after a photographer that made it famous. It stands alone in the Haden Valley of Yellowstone National Park. When shooting there last January, we felt obligated to honor Mr. Murphy by stopping to capture our own rendition of this iconic tree.

The single tree against the layers of mountain, shadow and clouds makes a statement of solitude. The bright blue of the sky reflecting off the snow punctuates the coldness of our location.

I have never been a fan of naming bridges, highways or buildings after people. One could do worse than having a tree in a national park named in their honor. Maybe someday there will be a culvert on some obscure mountain road named after me.

Photographer Chris and painter Robin Rohwer each week share a painting or photograph that captured their interest in hopes that it will also capture yours. They have a small studio and gallery in the Phoenix Building at 418 South Gay Street where you can stop and see their work. Their website is www.ChristopherRobinArts.com. All works are copyright protected.
