Every day brings a noticeable change for Zoo Knoxville’s red panda cubs, and just one week can make an incredible difference.

At 30 days old, the cubs are still tiny bundles of fluff, spending nearly all of their time sleeping and cuddled together in their nest. Their eyes remain closed, and while their coats are beginning to develop, much of their fur is still dark with only hints of the rich reddish color that red pandas are known for.

Fast forward just one week, and the transformation is remarkable.

Not only have the cubs opened their eyes for the first time, giving them their first glimpse of the world around them, but their beautiful red coloring has begun to emerge. Their faces are becoming more defined with the familiar white markings, and the rusty-red fur that makes red pandas so distinctive is much more noticeable. They are also becoming more alert, curious and aware of their surroundings, even though they still spend much of the day sleeping close together.

These early weeks are among the most exciting in a red panda’s development. Over the coming months, the cubs will become more active, begin climbing and exploring, and learn the skills they’ll need from their mother.

For now, these photos offer a wonderful snapshot of just how quickly red panda cubs grow. In only seven days, they have gone from sleepy, dark-coated newborns with closed eyes to bright-eyed youngsters whose signature red coloring is beginning to shine through.
