Schools closure reflects community divide

Sandra ClarkOpinion

Knox County Schools will be closed today (9/27) as the system prepares to enforce U.S. District Court Senior Judge Ronnie Greer’s order requiring masks for Covid mitigation in the schools. Greer’s order is well-reasoned: Judge Greer Order on Masks

Let’s keep our heads, folks. Superintendent Bob Thomas had little choice but to cancel school after social media and a rally in West Hills showed folks threatening to block entrances to the schools and generally create havoc today. I’m not clear why Thomas is requiring teachers to show up. And I’m worried about disruption to the economy as parents without childcare and little time to plan may not show up for work.

One thing I know. Factions must not use children in a political tug-of-war. We’re all tired of the coronavirus and the disruptions it has caused. But people are sick and some have died. Hospitals are full and health care workers are stressed beyond belief.

Let’s pull together to get through this. We can argue about politics later.
