Most Knox County residents know they pay property taxes, but they may not know exactly what happens after those dollars are collected — or the important role the Knox County Trustee’s Office plays in managing public funds.
That is the purpose of On the Money, a new monthly column on KnoxTNToday from the Knox County Trustee’s Office and Trustee Nick McBride.
Each month, On the Money will provide useful, easy-to-understand information about the responsibilities of the Trustee’s Office and the services available to Knox County residents.
The Knox County Trustee serves as the county’s banker and is responsible for collecting property taxes, receiving and accounting for county funds and investing temporarily idle funds. But the work of the office also touches residents in very practical ways.
Future columns may explain property tax bills and important deadlines, tax relief and tax freeze programs, convenient ways to make payments, answers to frequently asked questions and other services that residents may not realize are available.
The column will also provide an opportunity to explain what happens behind the scenes as public dollars are collected, safeguarded and managed.
Government works best when residents understand not only what their local offices do, but also how those offices can help them. On the Money is intended to make that information accessible without complicated government language.
