A new addition to Belltown Commons is bringing a little old-fashioned butcher-shop service to one of Northwest Knox County’s growing communities.
Simpson’s Meats Butchery & Market opened its second Knoxville-area retail location Sept. 28 at Belltown Commons in Powell, offering fresh beef, pork, chicken, specialty cuts and prepared foods.
The locally owned business has deep East Tennessee roots. Founded in 2012 by Jim Simpson and Jason Parkerson, Simpson’s Meats grew from a farming tradition dating to 1888. Jim Simpson is a fourth-generation farmer from Athens, Tennessee, while Parkerson brought his own cattle-farming experience to the business.
What began as a wholesale operation supplying Tennessee Whole Foods stores eventually expanded into retail sales. Simpson’s opened its first Knoxville butcher shop in West Knoxville in 2019.
More than steaks
The new Belltown location offers everything from everyday ground beef and chicken to premium steaks, roasts, sausages and cuts for grilling and smoking.
Customers also can find prepared foods and convenient take-home selections, including chicken salad, pimento cheese, twice-baked potatoes and pasta salad.
For families interested in stocking their freezers, Simpson’s offers bulk beef and family-sized purchasing options.
A personal touch
One feature that distinguishes a traditional butcher shop from a supermarket meat department is the opportunity to talk directly with someone who understands the products.
At Simpson’s, customers can ask for help choosing a cut, planning a special meal or finding the right meat for a smoker or grill.
The company also works with regional food producers, including Sweetwater Valley Farms, Sunrise Dairy and Benton’s Bacon.
Growing with Belltown
The new store joins the expanding collection of businesses at Belltown Commons, a mixed-use development along West Emory Road.
For residents of Powell, Karns and Northwest Knoxville, the addition means another convenient place to shop locally while supporting a business with longstanding Tennessee agricultural connections.
And for anyone who has ever stood at the meat counter wondering which cut would make the best Sunday roast, a knowledgeable butcher might be just what the neighborhood needed.
