Caregivers of loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia will have an opportunity to enjoy a meal, connect with others and take a short break from their daily responsibilities during an upcoming community event in Hardin Valley.
The Lantern at Morning Pointe, Hardin Valley will host an Alzheimer’s Support Lunch from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Hardin Valley Church, 10415 Hardin Valley Road in Knoxville.
The free community gathering is designed for local caregivers and their loved ones. While caregivers have lunch and spend time talking with others who understand the caregiving journey, their loved ones will be cared for. This allows caregivers to participate without arranging separate care.
“Caregivers give so much of themselves to the people they love, and sometimes they need someone to care for them, too,” said Vanessa Ellis, executive director of The Lantern at Morning Pointe, Hardin Valley. “We want this lunch to be a place where caregivers can sit down, enjoy a meal, meet others who understand what they are experiencing and know that their loved one is safe and cared for. We hope they leave feeling supported and reminded that they are not alone.”
The event is open to the public, including caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, family members and others interested in supporting local caregivers.
Organizers say caregiving can be isolating, making opportunities for respite and connection especially important. The lunch is intended to give caregivers a few hours in a welcoming environment while also helping strengthen a local network of people who understand the challenges they face.
For caregivers who spend so much of their time caring for someone else, the Sept. 10 gathering offers something simple but meaningful: a meal, conversation and time among people who understand.
