Golfers earn trips to state

Postseason golf takes the lead this week after Hardin Valley Academy and Bearden captured Region 2-AA championships Monday, Sept. 28, at Island Pointe Golf Club in Kodak.

The Hardin Valley girls shot 167 to win the region championship by seven strokes over Farragut. HVA junior Addisyn Newman earned medalist honors with a 76, one stroke ahead of West’s Reese McMahan, who also qualified for the state tournament as an individual.

Farragut junior Sophie Williams provided one of the week’s most compelling stories. Williams and senior teammate Harper Holmes each shot 87, forcing the friends into a playoff for the final individual state berth. Williams made par and Holmes bogeyed, sending Williams to state for the second consecutive year.

The Bearden boys also are headed to state after winning the Region 2-AA team championship with a 304. Hardin Valley’s Arjun Patel was the boys medalist with a 70, while Bearden’s William Ibbotson followed with a 72.

The TSSAA state golf championships are Oct. 5-9 at Sevierville Golf Club.

West shakes up the soccer race

West delivered one of the biggest soccer results of the week Tuesday, Sept. 29, defeating Bearden 2-1.

The match was scoreless at halftime before the Lady Rebels emerged with the victory. The loss was Bearden’s first in district play and also snapped a 13-game home winning streak that dated to last season.

West followed that victory two days later by edging Hardin Valley Academy 2-1. The back-to-back one-goal victories moved the Lady Rebels to 8-4-2.

Bearden responded quickly to its loss.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Maryville Thursday and shut out the Lady Rebels 4-0. Two days later, Bearden recorded another clean sheet, routing Chattanooga Christian 6-0. Bearden finished the week with an 11-3-1 record.

Farragut earns road shutout

Farragut bounced back from a loss the previous week with a strong road performance against Maryville.

The Lady Admirals blanked Maryville 1-0 Tuesday, improving to 9-4-1.

Webb keeps winning

Webb School of Knoxville continued an impressive soccer season with a 4-2 victory at Chattanooga Christian Wednesday.

The win was Webb’s sixth straight and improved the Lady Spartans to 11-1. During the six-match streak, Webb also had shutout wins over Girls Preparatory School and Anderson County.

Webb volleyball sweeps through midweek

The Lady Spartans also had a productive week on the volleyball court.

Webb swept Chattanooga Christian 3-0 Tuesday, winning 26-24, 25-21 and 25-17. Isla Adams recorded 28 assists, five digs and two aces; Shelly Spencer had 12 kills and 11 digs; and Denice Gaston contributed 22 digs.

Webb followed with another 3-0 sweep Wednesday, this time over Farragut.

Hardin Valley also picked up a pair of 3-0 volleyball victories during the reporting period, defeating Anderson County and Loudon.

Catholic edges Farragut

Knoxville Catholic opened the week with a tight 2-1 volleyball victory over Farragut Monday.

Cross country runners gather at Johnson University

The 13th annual Johnson University Invitational brought area cross country teams to Knoxville Thursday, Oct. 1.

The high school meet, presented by the Metro Knoxville XC Coaches Association with support from the Knoxville Track Club, included separate boys and girls 5K races. More than 300 athletes had been entered for the event.

The meet came as area runners enter the final stretch of the cross country season and prepare for championship races later this month.

From golf’s state qualifiers to tight soccer matches and volleyball sweeps, Knoxville-area athletes are making the most of the final weeks of the fall sports season.
