Jean Hess and Emily Taylor, renowned local artists, will be hosting a reception on Friday, November 3, 2023, 5-9 p.m. at Broadway Studios and Gallery, 1127 North Broadway, Knoxville. Artists will also be present on Saturday, November 4, 1-6 p.m. at the same location. Other gallery hours are by appointment: see below for details.
Jean Hess and Emily Taylor demonstrate a committed willingness to experiment, play and take risks in order to enchant and surprise you.
The artists are described: “Their visual vocabularies are highly personal yet show mutual sympathy.”
Using at-hand resources from natural, recycled, damaged and re-worked materials, the artists visualize their imagery from nature, floating and layering pieces together.
In their pieces, one can see the hesitations and back-tracks, erasures and re-thinking as each has worked their artistry.
These artist friends follow threads and through lines that, over time, demonstrate evidence of continuity and connection.
Jean Hess’ work can be seen in the Knoxville Museum of Art permanent collection, installed in the Knoxville Convention Center and available at the KMA gift shop.
Her studio in Fountain City is open by appointment: jeanhess@bellsouth.net. There one will see a wider range of work including 3Dbox constructions, hanging mobiles of antique trinkets and jewelry, stitched tapestries of vintage and found fabrics, paintings and collages.
