Picking up a new prescription may be routine, but taking a few minutes to talk with a pharmacist before leaving the counter can help patients use their medication safely and effectively.

Vaughn Pharmacy in Powell recently shared five questions worth asking before starting a new medication.

  1. How much should I take — and when?

Directions such as “take twice daily” may sound straightforward, but patients should know whether doses need to be spaced a certain number of hours apart and whether the time of day matters.

  1. Could it interact with something else I take?

Patients should make sure their pharmacist knows about other prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins and supplements. A new medication can interact with products that may seem unrelated.

  1. Does it matter what I eat or drink?

Some medications should be taken with food, while others work best on an empty stomach. Certain medicines also may interact with alcohol, dairy products or supplements. Asking before leaving the pharmacy can prevent confusion later.

  1. Which side effects should concern me?

Not every side effect signals a problem. Some medications may cause expected effects such as mild drowsiness or an upset stomach. Patients should ask which symptoms are considered normal and which warrant a call to a doctor or other health care provider.

  1. What should I do if I miss a dose?

The answer varies by medication. Taking a forgotten dose late may be appropriate for one medicine but not another. Knowing what to do before a missed dose occurs can prevent a patient from guessing.

The larger message from Vaughn Pharmacy is simple: Ask questions.

Prescription labels and medication information sheets provide important instructions, but a pharmacist can answer questions based on an individual’s medications and circumstances.
