Somewhere between Tellico Plains and Ducktown, just past Coker Creek and a few other communities you may never have heard of, there is a short stretch of highway that parallels the Hiwassee River. Here, the river spreads out, flowing between small islands of rocks and trees, to where you hardly realize you are looking at a significant East Tennessee river.

I enjoy discovering scenic back roads and frequently take this route when traveling to Cleveland or Blue Ridge, Georgia. With camera in hand, this spot often tempts me to pull over and explore what the current season has to offer.

On this late fall morning, I was rewarded with soft early sunlight illuminating a small island with just enough fog in the background for a touch of mystery. The beautiful reflection in the still water was the ultimate payoff for my persistence in stopping here.
