There are moments as a photographer when everything aligns, such as the featured image where the boat, the frame and the light work together seamlessly. When these opportunities present, Badger accepts them as a gift and then gratefully strives to visually honor the special light that the afternoon offers.
On a recent October afternoon at Biltmore, I was positioned on a path adjacent to the shore and facing The Lagoon when two fishermen appeared. They drifted in their small craft directly into my viewfinder, perfectly placed between the near trees and the distant silhouette of the House that was – until their appearance – the focal point of the scene. The autumn colors were already working their magic with the golds and oranges burning in the foliage and reflections broken into shimmering pieces on the still water. The magic moment had arrived.
Recently, I’ve been studying and incorporating into my photography the work of the Neo-Luminists of the Hudson River School and in particular artists Sanford Gifford and Thomas Moran. These painters understood that light in a scene could seemingly rise from inside the landscape itself. This method shaped how I saw and later interpreted the scene in my photo, just as it influenced the Hunter’s Moon image that I captured and discussed last week. Here the same impulse guided the eye: a soft, luminous atmosphere, color that feels both intense and harmonious, and the sense that the air itself is carrying the golden color.
Though not a painter, George Vanderbilt filled Biltmore with landscape portraits that prized this quality of light and atmosphere. Standing on the shore that day, it was easy to imagine one of those artists accepting the same invitation as did Badger – the boat, Lagoon, and House rising above the trees with the Fall season offering its brightest palette.
Some compositions arrive already finished. This one felt that way the moment the boat settled into my waiting frame.
