Deszmer Pollock: A woman ahead of her time

Deszmer Pollock

Deszmer Lee Pollock, 100, was a pioneer. A Kingsport native, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from UT-Memphis in 1947 as part of the U.S. Cadet Nursing Program of WWII. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1948 and worked in the experimental Nuclear Medicine Research Center where she provided care for patients receiving “atomic cocktails” as a novel approach to thyroid and other cancers. Her husband, Bill, owned The Music Box in Jackson Square, Oak Ridge. They were married for almost 50 years when he died in 2003. Mrs. Pollock worked in private practice until the birth of her son, Jim, and returned in 1973 to work at Westmall Nursing Home in Oak Ridge until retiring in her 70s. She leaves a son and daughter, two granddaughters and many friends. Services are Saturday, Jan. 26. Details here.

Frankie Charlene Solomon, 83, of Jefferson City died Jan. 21. She retired after 30 years of teaching in the Jefferson County school system. Depending on class size, she taught between 900 and 600 kids over that time.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Solomon, and daughter, Suzanne Davis. Services are today (1/23) in New Market.

Curtis Allin

Curtis Saufley Allin passed away on Jan. 15. His family held a private service at Sherwood Chapel in Blount County. Mr. Allin trained with Casagrande Consultants at Harvard University and then was the lab supervisor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee for 40 years.
