Rutledge, Tennessee, founded in the late 1700s, has served as the Grainger County seat since 1801. The community sits quietly among the rolling hills and river bends where life has long moved to the rhythm of water, weather, and conversation.
As my Rutledge friend says, “The real story of Rutledge has been written on front porches.”
What is past in some areas is the present in Rutledge. Summer evenings still hear the creak of porch swings while neighbors wave as they pass on the country roads. Others are talking about the weather rolling in over Clinch Mountain or whether the bass are biting down at Cherokee Lake, a recreation created in the 1940s by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Children still chase lightning bugs through the yards in the early evening and play hide and seek at each other’s houses.
Rutledge is the kind of place where people measure wealth differently. Maybe a good fishing hole, a porch facing the sunset, or tomatoes growing heavily in the garden is the bar to reach.
Even today, Grainger County still carries that spirit. The county remains known for its lakes, outdoor recreation, and tomatoes!
And if you drive through Rutledge slowly enough near dusk, you can still see it — porch lights glowing softly, rocking chairs moving back and forth, and someone somewhere talking about the one that got away.

I truly appreciate the focus on “Close to Home” adventures. I’m always looking for new places to explore that are close to home.
Awesome town! So evidently the kids chasing lightening bugs aren’t totally distracted by cellphones, and the City/County haven’t killed off the lightening bugs with mosquito spray and roundup. Kudos for that.
Thank you for the well deserved recognition of Rutledge! I am from Rutledge and am so glad someone recognizes its wealth!
