Can I learn a new game without knowing the rules, without embarrassing myself and without taking it too seriously?

If the game is Bunco, the answer is a resounding yes!

A group of enthusiastic beginners recently gathered at Fountain City Presbyterian Church to discover what all the excitement surrounding Bunco is about. Most arrived with little or no experience, but by the end of the evening, they had discovered something even better than mastering a new game: the joy of laughing together.

Bunco is a fast-paced dice game that requires very little skill, no complicated strategy and absolutely no previous experience. Players roll three dice, try to score points and move between tables as rounds progress. The rules are simple enough for beginners, but the excitement can make even experienced players forget what they’re doing.

And that’s half the fun.

Facilitator Susan Parker described the evening as an unforgettable experience.

“About 90% of the group had never played. It was hilarious,” Parker said. “The laughter and enthusiasm was like a middle school girls’ slumber party. They were all requesting to play again soon!”

That might be the best endorsement any beginner’s activity could receive.

The beauty of Bunco is that everyone starts on relatively equal footing. You don’t have to be athletic, artistic or particularly competitive. You just need to be willing to roll the dice, follow along and enjoy the company.

And while winning a round might bring a cheer, the real victory comes from discovering that trying something unfamiliar doesn’t have to be intimidating.

For adults who sometimes hesitate to join an activity because they don’t know how to play, an evening like this offers a welcome reminder: Nobody has to be an expert to have a wonderful time.

There is also something special about a room filled with people laughing so freely that they forget to worry about looking silly. New friendships form, conversations flow and the pressures of everyday life take a back seat for a little while.

The enthusiasm at Fountain City Presbyterian Church suggests this may not be the group’s last Bunco gathering. Participants were already asking when they could play again.

By the end of the evening, the question was no longer, “Can I do it?”

It was, “When can we do it again?”

The Can I Do It? takeaway: Sometimes the hardest part of learning something new is simply showing up. Bunco proves that a little courage, three dice and a roomful of laughter can turn beginners into enthusiastic players.
