Zoo Knoxville is excited to welcome Elsa, an Albino American Alligator. Elsa comes from an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institution in Florida and will call Zoo Knoxville home temporarily.
Elsa’s pale skin and pink-tinted eyes are the result of albinism, a genetic condition that prevents her body from producing normal amounts of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for coloration in the skin, scales and eyes, and it also provides protection from the sun. Because Elsa produces very little melanin, she can sunburn easily.
Her appearance also illustrates why an Albino American Alligator would face significant challenges surviving in the wild. American alligators typically rely on their dark coloration to blend into the wetlands, swamps, marshes, rivers and lakes they inhabit. Elsa’s coloration makes that camouflage much more difficult, leaving an albino alligator more visible in its environment.
“Elsa’s story is about more than what makes her look different. Her albinism helps us talk about the challenges she would face in the wild and the challenges facing wildlife everywhere,” said Michael Ogle, Curator of Herpetology and Birds at Zoo Knoxville. “By connecting people with animals like Elsa, we can turn curiosity into a greater investment in protecting wildlife and wild places.”
Elsa is the newest resident of the The Clayton Family Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus (ARC), where guests can see some of the world’s most fascinating reptiles and amphibians and learn more about the role they play in healthy ecosystems.
Boo! at the Zoo
Zoo Knoxville is preparing to welcome costumed children, playful monsters, and families looking for a not-too-scary Halloween adventure when BOO! at the Zoo returns in October.
The after-hours celebration will run from 5:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 3-4, Oct. 8-11, Oct. 15-18, Oct. 22-25 and Oct. 29-30. The final ticket sale each evening is at 8 p.m. Zoo Knoxville’s website currently lists Sunday, Oct. 25, as sold out.
New for 2026 is HallowGlow Forest, an immersive light experience included with admission. Guests will travel through a glowing forest and encounter fun characters along the way, adding a fresh attraction to the event’s familiar Halloween traditions.
The evening also includes the Monster Mash Dance Party, where Knox Vegas DJ will lead family-friendly music, games and activities. Guests can meet characters, watch live performances by local talent and try free Halloween-themed carnival games ranging from cornhole to inflatable axe throwing.
Treat stations sponsored by local businesses will be placed along the trail, giving children plenty of opportunities to collect Halloween goodies. Families may also enter the costume contest by posing for a photo at the photo opportunity outside the Carnival Tent and posting it online. Participants should tag Zoo Knoxville and use the event’s costume-contest hashtags. Winners will receive a special prize.
Seasonal food will be available throughout the zoo. Menu highlights include spiderweb nachos, build-your-own eyeball tacos, s’mores funnel cake fries, a chicken-and-waffle cone with spicy maple syrup, a BOO! bacon burger, and BOOberry pumpkin pie. Specialty cocktails, beer and other themed beverages will be offered to guests 21 and older.
General admission is $15 for adults and children ages 3 and older. Zoo Knoxville members pay $5 after logging in to receive the discount. Children younger than 3 are admitted free, and parking is free. During opening weekend, members will also receive exclusive princess and superhero meet-and-greet opportunities.
