Pellissippi State Community College made history with a decisive start to Tennessee Community College Athletic Association men’s soccer competition, defeating Dyersburg State Community College 8-0 on Sunday, Sept. 20.
The match was the first TCCAA men’s soccer contest for Pellissippi State and the first meeting between the Panthers and Eagles. Pellissippi State controlled play from the opening minutes and built a 4-0 halftime lead before adding four more goals in the second half.
Akos Gyebnar opened the scoring in the fifth minute and added his second goal shortly before halftime on an assist from Sebastian Cortez. Thompson struck in the ninth minute, and Jean Ossa scored in the 19th minute after receiving a pass from Joseph Otteno.
Cortez carried the momentum into the second half, scoring in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later, he assisted Ossa’s second goal of the match, giving the Panthers a 6-0 advantage.
With Pellissippi State turning to its reserves, Gian Moore scored his first goal as a Panther in the 75th minute. Beckham Phavongsay completed the scoring two minutes later by sending a long ball into the box for the final 8-0 margin.
The victory gave the Panthers a strong opening statement in the new conference matchup while also providing valuable playing time throughout the roster. Pellissippi State and Dyersburg State are scheduled to meet twice more this season as the teams compete for the TCCAA title.
